PRINCE VALIANT by Hal Foster

For over thirty four years Hal Foster produced the most elegant comic strip ever to appear, a classic in every sense of the word. Now his adventures of Prince Valiant and the knights of the round table are being reprinted in this important series from Fantagraphics—in full color: one Sunday comic strip (there were no Val daily comic strips) per page, almost a year of Sundays per volume. The complete Hal Foster Prince Valiant runs 50 volumes (a detail from the cover of Volume 34 is pictured above right). Uniform format trade paperback volumes are 11x13, 48 full color pages each plus square spine color covers.

Young Gods & Friends
by Barry Windsor-Smith

Windsor-Smith became a comics superstar in the 1970s with his work on Marvel's Conan. In the mid-'90s he launched Storyteller, an ambitious, tabloid-size magazine featuring three ongoing series. But it was discontinued after nine issues, with the series barely begun. Young GODS & Friends, from Fantagraphics Books, presents all of the Young GODS material that appeared in issues 1-9 of BWS: STORYTELLER, plus the Young GODS pages completed for the never-published issues #10 & 11, and many pages of new story and editorial content created especially for this edition. This edition re-launches a saga inspired by comics legend Jack Kirby's Thor. The night before young Prince Heros' wedding, he sets off for a final night of space-spanning adventure with his boyhood friend and fellow deity, Strangehands. Along the way, the godlings encounter the beauteous but foul-mouthed Princess Adastra, older sister of the bride-to-be. Windsor-Smith leavens the inherent pretentiousness of this tale of self-important deities by spoofing their mock-Shakespearian speech; the irreverent Adastra, in particular, brings the outer-space proceedings down to earth. Meanwhile, his idealized, Pre-Raphaelite-influenced figures and expansive panels, and the book's oversized format, befit the grandiose, space-spanning plot. Publication of STORYTELLER was suspended in 1997. The material presented in the Young GODS & Friends collection is the most appropriate denouement that can be achieved under the circumstances.
