POLLY AND HER PALS
by Cliff Sterrett
Polly and Her Pals began as a daily on December 4, 1912, and ran an incredible 46 years, ending with Sterrett's retirement in 1958. The title is a bit misleading as the strip centered more on the activities of Maw and Paw Perkins than on their daughter Polly and her collegiate suitors. Other members of the menage included nephew Asher Earl Perkins, the family butler Neewah, a brat named Angel and her mother Maw's Cousin Carrie, and Paw's constant shadow, a scrawny cat named Kitty. By 1920, the strip took a turn towards pictorial strangeness and novelty when Sterrett introduced elements of cubism and surrealism. By the end of the 1920s, the strip had reached its creative height. Polly and Her Pals, in terms of narrative and graphic inventiveness, as well as characterization and comedy, is one of the most memorable works of comic art yet created. This massive collection, published as Comic Strip Showcase 2, reprints daily strips from November 5, 1930 through December 31, 1931. 8½x11, 176 black & white pages, squarebound color softcover. .... $13.95
